今月12/6最大のVC/アクセラレーターの一つであるPlug and Play の日本支社様と、日本細胞農業協は精密発酵に関わるイベントを開催しましたのでご報告いたします。

本会は、精密発酵について主に企業の方を対象にした日本で過去最大規模となる情報提供とネットワーキングの会であり、当日は現地参加約60名、オンライン参加約120名と大変盛況なイベントとなりました。

当日は精密発酵の簡単なレクチャーと、パネルディスカッション、精密発酵企業（海外）のピッチイベントを行い、最後にはネットワーキングの時間が設けられました。日本細胞農業協会からは岡田健成(現理事)が登壇いたしました。

本会は、精密発酵について特化して、オフラインでの交流も含めてオープンなイベントを開催した事例としては日本で過去初めて・最大規模のものとなりました。

日本細胞農業協会では今後とも産官学と連携し、培養肉・精密発酵などの細胞から農作物を作る「細胞農業」分野の日本語での正しい情報発信機会を提供していきます。

背景

近年、持続可能な社会を目指す中で、低環境負荷な食糧生産技術の模索が重要視されています。そのような中、新しい生産技術として、培養肉や培養ミルクなどの細胞を使った農作物生産「細胞農業」が注目されています。

細胞農業には、哺乳類細胞や魚類細胞を用いた「培養肉」領域と微生物を使った「精密発酵」領域が存在します。

従来、日本においては細胞農業分野のうち、片方の培養肉が特に注目・報道されていました。
しかしながら、微生物を使った「精密発酵」領域については世界でスタートアップに対する投資額が急成長しているにもかかわらず、日本では表立った動きが見られていませんでした。

そこで、精密発酵に焦点をあて、知名度向上、産業化促進、企業間のネットワーキング拡大を目的としたプログラムを、NPO法人日本細胞農業協会と世界各地のスタートアップと関係を持つVC/アクセラレーターのPlug and Play Japan 様と共同開催することにいたしました。
当日は12/3 、Plug and Play Japan 様のオフィスにて、会を開催しました。

パネルディスカッションでは、明治HD様、経済産業省フードテック若手有志（当時 内閣官房に出向中）様、Plug and Play Japan 様とともに、日本細胞農業協会からは岡田健成（現理事）がパネルディスカッションにおいて登壇しテクノロジー、近年の動向についてお話ししました。

また、ピッチイベントも開催され Plug and Play 投資先であるRemilk社 (代替ミルク)、COLIPI Biotech社 (代替油脂)、Planet A Foods社 (代替ココア)、ScaleUp Bio社 (精密発酵事業の受託製造)といった精密発酵企業4社が登壇しました。

最後はネットワーキングが行われ無事終了しました。本会の参加者はオフライン約60名、オンライン約110名であり、精密発酵について特化して、交流も含めてオープンなイベントを開催した事例としては日本で過去初めて・最大規模のものとなりました。

Precision Fermentation Event was co-hosted by Plug and Play Japan.

Overview

We are pleased to report that on December 6, 2012, the  Cellular Agriculture Institute of Commons (CAIC) held an event on precision fermentation with the Japan branch of Plug and Play, one of the world's largest VC/accelerators.

This was the largest-ever informational and networking event on the topic of precision fermentation in Japan, and was very successful, with approximately 60 participants on-site and 120 participants online.

The event consisted of a brief lecture on precision fermentation, a panel discussion, a pitch event for precision fermentation companies (from overseas), and networking time at the end.From CAIC, Kensei Okada(Board member of CAIC) is presented at panel discussion.

This was the first and largest open event ever held in Japan specifically for precision fermentation, including offline exchanges.

CAIC will continue to collaborate with industry, government, and academia to provide opportunities to disseminate correct information in Japanese on the field of "cellular agriculture," which produces agricultural products from cells, such as cultured meat and precision fermentation.

Background

In recent years, the search for low environmental impact food production technologies has become important in the quest for a sustainable society. Under such circumstances, "cellular agriculture," the production of crops using cells such as cultured meat and cultured milk, is attracting attention as a new production technology.

Cellular agriculture includes "cultured meat" using mammalian and fish cells and "precision fermentation" using microorganisms.

In the past, one of the two areas, cultured meat, has received particular attention and media coverage in Japan.

However, in the area of "precision fermentation" using microorganisms, despite the rapid growth of investment in startups worldwide, there has been no significant movement in Japan.

Therefore, we have decided to hold a program focusing on precision fermentation with the NPO and Plug and Play Japan, a VC/accelerator that has relationships with startups around the world, to increase awareness, promote industrialization, and expand networking among companies. We have decided to hold this program jointly with NPO Japan Cellular Agriculture Association and Plug and Play Japan, a VC/accelerator that has relationships with startups worldwide.

The event was held on December 3 at Plug and Play Japan's office.

In the panel discussion, Kensei Okada ,current board member of Cellular Agriculture Institute of Commons spoke about recent trends in technology, along with Meiji HD, METI Foodtech Young Volunteers (on secondment to the Cabinet Secretariat at the time), and Plug and Play Japan. Kensei Okada spoke about technology and recent trends.

Four precision fermentation companies, including Plug and Play portfolio company Remilk (alternative milk), COLIPI Biotech (alternative fats), Planet A Foods (alternative cocoa), and ScaleUp Bio (contract manufacturing of precision fermentation business), also took the stage at the pitch event. The event ended with a networking session. This was the first and largest precision fermentation-specific open event ever held in Japan, including a networking session.
